It’s complicated for sure but with your ongoing guidance and experience, authors are enabled to make decisions based on actual information about how to think about publishing their books.
A must-read for writers who are working on book projects--I'm sharing with all my groups. You are so right about distribution, Brooke: it's key to a book's success, and bookstore/library sales absolutely depend on print run and inventory. Traditional publishing is a black box. Your transparency is immeasurably healthy for all of us in this business. (And yes, it's a business.) Thank you.
After a decade working on it, this week I finished a final draft of what I hope will be a viable and important book. I'm just now poking my head up to figure out, "Now What?" Brooke, your articles are extremely helpful, and your methodology makes perfect sense. Thank You!
Thanks, Brooke, for the insight and detail. I hold you in high esteem, and also hold Jane Friedman that way. It’s helpful to hear your take on hers and have the bigger picture laid out clearly and comprehensively.
I also hold Jane Friedman in high esteem. She knows more about book publishing than most, and she's not a hybrid publisher. On the quotes she gave to P&W and on how hybrid is represented on her chart, it's important for me to say that I'm deep in it, and that's not how it actually works for those of us with traditional distribution who are acting as real publishers, and who are carving out a meaningful space in the ecosystem for authors.
Bravo for illuminating this so clearly! I'll be sharing this in this weekend's Cuppa (not sure how to link to another Substack in these comments). Thank you for writing an explanation I'm happy to point subscribers and clients toward. 🙌
This article motivated me to become a paid subscriber (my first on substack) as Brooke is supporting hybrid authors so well, I wanted to do my small part.

This is brilliant. So well said. Keep doing what you are doing - authors need you.

Nuance is a rare thing. Thank you for sharing it.
Breaking it down, point by point. Thanks!
So, so, proud to be a SWP author! Thank you, Brooke, for this deep dive into an examination of true hybrid publishing.
And proud to have you!

Thank you, Brooke, for this informative piece. Hybrid is on my radar for sure, and this is most helpful. Nancy
