Two things that make me happy—a night out with friends and good food! The above photo is from a 2023 dinner at Bestia in Los Angeles with a group of my best friends, and captures well the moment and the memory. Outside of my work as a publisher/coach/editor, I’m a lifelong runner who recently took up open-water swimming. Last year, I completed the Alcatraz #SharkFest swim in San Francisco. I am a fiercely proud mom of a thirteen-year-old boy. I live in Berkeley, California, with my partner, my son, and our five animals (two dogs and three cats). Below are some snapshots that cover the whole family!
What You Can Expect from “Writerly Things”
Oh my gosh, I am loving Substack! You can expect a new thought piece from me on Sundays. I’m still new here, figuring out a lot of things about engagement and this beautiful community. I started this newsletter at the urging of my dear friend and podcast cohost Grant Faulkner, who writes “Intimations,” after we covered Substack as a “trend” on our weekly Write-minded podcast. Over the years I’ve written regularly for Huffington Post, then Publishers Weekly, usually the kinds of articles I intend to write about here—about this wild industry I’ve been lucky enough to be deeply entrenched in for 24 years.
I give all credit to you, my reader, for motivating to write weekly about topics I want writers and authors to know about—publishing news and trends, the experience of being an author in the world, the author mindset, memoir, and other writerly things.
No paywalls here. I’m grateful to those of you who subscribe to support my work, free or paid, and I love it when readers share my posts with your writing community and friends. Thank you for the gift of being one of my readers! And for keeping me going!
