Why host a writing event by and for women writers? I wrote a whole book about why writing as a female presents unique challenges. Our history, our culture, and our conditioning affect how we show up on the page. To write our memoirs honestly, we often have to overcome our pasts and stand up to the inner voices that tell us to stop, who try to throw us off our game with messages like: Who cares and why bother?
Women Writing Memoir exists to encourage other memoirists to go the distance. Earlier this year I shared that I’m waiting to publish my memoir. I am in the swirl—around fear of outcome, mostly. What will poeple think? is a question that’s hounded me. But I’m writing through it so that when it’s time to go, I’ll be ready. Every memoirists I’ve ever worked with writes through the doubts that hound them: Will I hurt someone I love? Has my story been done before by someone else, and better? What will it look like and feel like on the other side of publication? Should I keep going? Does my story matter?
The memoir swirl is real, and Women Writing Memoir is fuel—vitamins, chocolate, water, whatever metaphor suits you—for your journey. If you’re looking for a dose of goodness and inspiration, I hope you’ll join us. Be in community with me, Linda Joy Myers, Maggie Smith, Ingrid Rojas Contreras, Susan Ito, Melissa Febos, and Regina Brooks these next six weeks, starting tomorrow.
